Bill Appel, Executive Director
If the picture on our wall of a young Bill Appel in boxing gear standing next to an equally young Cassius Clay is any indication, Bill is not one to back away from a challenge! This two time Golden Glove winner has been fighting the good fight with GCCDC for over 12 years initially as board member and now as our current Executive Director. Bill has an extensive background in non-profit and management having worked for 15 years as the Director of Emergency Services with the Partnership for the Homeless where he was responsible for establishing over 50 faith-based shelters throughout NYC. Bill was then tasked with running the 150 bed Peter Young Shelter for five years. Bill spent 13 years prior with General Motors as part of their overseas operation. Bill has lived in and loved the Gowanus community for the past 32 years and has been working to clean the canal, improve the neighborhood and better the lives of its residents throughout his tenure as a civic activist.
Lydia E. Buffington, Community Liaison
Lydia Buffington is the heart and soul of the Gowanus Canal Community Development Corporation. After working in JCPenny’s corporate media and communications department for over 20 years across all divisions including photo, audio and video production. She finished tenure as a Producer and now she utilizes these critical communications skills as our Community Liaison. For fourteen years Lydia has been responsible for leading our community outreach and communication program. On a daily basis Lydia connects with residents of the neighborhood helpihg with housing needs and other issues they face in their daily lives. Lydia has manages our exciting Streetfair program, holiday events and other community activities. Lydia joined the Gowanus Canal CDC in 1996 and has been a fixture of the organization since.
